Gelukkig!

Ten days, a LOT of paracetamol, misery and peniciline later and I feel a lot better again. Not totally like I should, my condition is never very good and pneumonia doesn't make that better... But I'm on the good path, and fortunally it is Christmas vacation which gives me the opportunity to take my rest. I even think I am going to stitch a bit tonight...

kerstvakantie?

Today Christmas vacation started, but unfortunately it doesn't feel that way yet. Just like husband and eldest daughter earlier this week, I too am down with the flu... youngest daughter is having a bad cold too so I hope we are all feeling better again when Christmas comes!

Quiltboeken

Along with my quilting hobby came the passion for quiltbooks: beautiful books full of inspiration, perfect to look through while drinking a nice cup of tea. The covers alone promise lots of beautiful stuff. And so I have assembled a nice pile of books since my first quiltlesson. Take this one, Japanese Quilt blocks, to mix and match by Susan Briscoe. I bought the book during my lunch break today, with a gift certificate I forgot I had in my bag (you see, not cleaning out your bag very often has its advantages). I liked the cover so much, I bought it without having looked in it. When I got home and got it out of the plastic I wasn't disappointed, there's lots and lots of beauty in it!

Mystery of the Month block #3

Finally I finished a block of the Designer Myster Block of the Month club! Earlier I finished block #1, but I did the sewing by machine and it is much more difficult to get those sharp corners then. I wasn't satisfied with the result, and thus decided to make the blocks by hand. It is such a relaxing job, and so I finished block #3 this weekend, and block #4 is well on its way too!

This week we heard that Veerles teacher quit her job to make a trip around the world, and today will be her last day at school. So there had to be a goodbye gift, and since it was such short notice, I made that last night in between other things to do. The picture is not so good because of the artificial light, but I think it turned out very nice, so I had to show it to you! Thanks to Help mijn moeder borduurt! for the pattern.

While writing my previous post I was in pain in the stomach region, pain that was getting worse and worse by the hour, until it almost literally took my breath away. I decided to visit my doctor on Wednesday and she told me I had two crushed ribs... probably the result of some reckless hugging by my youngest daughter last Sunday. So I have to take it slow at the moment, fortunately I got some good painkillers from my doctor, which make the pain bearable. We did have a good vacation though, yesterday we took the children to the playground and they had lots of fun.

This week I was asked if I could make a towel with only a name on it. Of course I can make that, but I thought it would be kinda dull... I decided to solve that problem like this, I hope they will like it!

Two more free days and then it is back to work again. Tomorrow, besides the groceries and housekeeping, I want to do some crafting, and in the evening I am going to show a friend, who bought the same embroidery machine as me, how to work with it. For Sunday the weather forecasts aren't that good, but I never get bored staying in!

herfstvakantie!

We are enjoying our autumn vacation over here. We don't have to do anything, we sleep late, we do everything on the time we want to... This morning we enjoyed a two hour walk with the dog, and this afternoon we alle are doing our own thing. For me that is quilting, last week I bought a little quilt kit at a craft expo, and I am quilting that now, I am almost halfway. It will be a tablecloth for the coffee table. The colors match our livingroom furniture perfectly!

And this I also want to show you: a towel made for my eldest daughters' friend. She celebrated her 9th birthday and owns a Scottish Westie, so I embroiedered that for her, combined with an application pattern, because otherwise the white dog wouldn't be visible on the white background. Unfortunately my daughter didn't get to enjoy the party, she got sick and was brought home again. But the gift was greatly appreciated!

Summer stop is over!

I had sort of a summer stop at this blog, I couldn't find the inspiration to write. It was a lovely summer, not at all weather to sit at the computer. School vacation flew by, we went camping near the sea for a few weeks. Now the normal rhythm is getting back, the kids went to school for two weeks again already. I did do some stitching during summer, I even finished Cirque des Cercles on vacation! Now I like the fact that it is getting dark earlier again, and so the nights become longer, to do some crafting. I am busy with quilting again and as far as stitching goes I would like to get some UFO's finished. So there is no time to get bored!

Quilt finish!

Last week I finished my first real quilt, I have shown you the kit earlier here. It took quite a while, but now I finally knew how to finish it, so here's my table runner. I am very pleased with the result! It is sewn by machine and quilted by hand.

Ik heb ook weer wat handdoeken gemaakt.

I also made some towels again.

Laundry day

Today was laundry day. The weather is lovely over here and so I decided to prep my fabrics for the start of Guutes antique quilt project. Look at those beautiful pics! In the last pic the fabric lying on top is my background fabric, a very small white on white print. The project starts next week, I am very curious if I can keep up, since this is going to be a very big quilt... The fabrics are from the "Civil War Crossing" line from Moda, I was able to buy a pack of 36 fat quarters through the internet earlier!

Designer Mystery Block of the Month quilt

Today I received my first shipment of the Designer Mystery Block of the Month quilt from The Fat Quarter Shop. This is the finishing kit, I hope to receive the kit for block 1 also this week. I really like the colors, and I want to make the quilt for our bed.

June 18, 1999

Fijne tiende trouwdag schat!

I just went through our wedding pictures, and realized a lot has happened since that day... but the most important is: we're still together! Happy 10th anniversary darling!

Another present: this is for my daughter's friend, who celebrates her birthday today. I think she will like...

Minnie

In the previous post I told you I bought a new sewing machine. And it does not only sew very well, but it embroiders as well. So I have been practising a bit, connecting the machine to my laptop and then see the magic happen! I never thought machine embroidery would be fun, but to my surprise I like it very much. I have made several gifts already, here's Minnie, embroidered on a pink towel for my friends 3-year old daughter Faye.

It has been almost a month since I posted on this blog... where has that month gone? It was a month of long week-ends, birthdays and other parties, daytrips, getting used to my new job, studying, going to bed late, getting up early, and more stuff like that. And unfortunately not much time to spend on my hobbies. What I did do is invest in my hobbies: I bought a mighty sewing machine with embroidery unit, which I'm very happy with. And now it is time for some good resolutions: spending some more time being creative, so I can show you some nice things on this blog!

Yesterday evening I had another quilt lesson, we learned applique with Bondaweb and blanket stitch. I think it is one of the most fun things we have learned up until now, although I didn't think that way before I learned it! In fact, I thought it was so much fun, that I already finished what I started yesterday! Next time, we are going to learn applique the traditional way, I still have to do some preparation for that, so my homework isn't finished yet.

Lone star

A while ago the second quiltcourse started, and in the meantime I had two lessons alreday. In those lessons we learned how to make an 8-pointed star (also known as Lone Star or star of Bethlehem). Here is my result so far, I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. Now I have to think what to make of it. In the course room there is a wallhanging made of the techniques learned in this particular course, and I like that very much. But I don't want to make exactly the same, so I have some puzzling to do before I know what the end result will be...

party!

That birthday cake wasn't really my cup of tea... what I thought would be the hardest part (covering and decorating) turned out to be the easiest, while the baking (which normally isn't that hard for me) didn't seem to work at all... First I forgot to put the sugar in (it was still in a bowl on the counter while the cake already was in the oven), and the second one turned out way to dry. So this morning I bought some safe cake mix and I baked, filled and decorated a cake. The birthday girl told me she'd like a pink cake with red hearts...

The party was fun, there were 7 little girls running around the house. They ate candy, sang, painted, played, ate, and danced until it was time to go home. And the birthday girl enjoyed it all so much! On Sunday we will celebrate again at the "grownupsparty".

dinsdag 7 april 2009

5!

The cupcakes for her classmates are ready (my first attempt in cake decorating as a practice for the real thing), the "real" cake is cooling down to be filled and decorated tomorrow, she has a new dress, shoes and stockings, daddy is going to decorate the room later this evening, a gift has to be wrapped... and we are ready for Isabelles fifth birthday!!!

A new LHN project

Since I have time now to work on my own things again, I couldn't resist starting this cute new pattern from LHN. So I picked out the fabric and floss and started Tuesday evening, while watching tv. I am not making it with the Crescent Colours threads the pattern calls for, since I don't have those. I had some Weeks Dye Works and Gentle Art Sampler Threads I could substitute them with. Althought the saying doesn't apply to me (I don't bring my stitching everywhere), I think it is a lovely pattern, and like all LHN it is a joy to work on!

Finally!!!

Friendship Sampler RR - Diana and Karin

The heart I stitched on Diana's sampler

Diana's sampler so far

The heart I stitched on Karin's sampler

Karin's sampler so far

This week was full of RR's for me, I had to send three out! Today I'll show you episode two and three of the Friendship Sampler RR.

First is Diana's RR. Diana chose to replace the original flosses with shades of purple variegated threads, I think it is a very original and beautiful choice!

Next on is Karin's RR. She is sticking with the DMC conversion that came with the pattern, although there are several hearts she will stitch in variegated threads. This too will be a beautiful sampler, I'm sure!

I'll save the pics of Marion's RR for tomorrow, so I'll have something to show you then as well...

My first binding!

I have finished my first quilt with a binding and put a tunnel on the back to hang it. That is what we learned last Thursday in the course. Since I hadn't finished quilting my table runner yet, I brought a little stitchwork I tried to finish with fabrics and binding earlier, but that didn't work out the way it should. Now it did! I also registered for the next course, I am enjoying it very much!

A Friendship Sampler

Stofjes stofjes stofjes - Fabrics fabrics fabrics

This morning I bought yards and yards of shiny fabric at the market, to make costumes for carnival. Yesterday I bought the patterns, I am supposed to transform these fabrics into geisha costumes for me and the girls, and a samurai costume for Eric. The only thing I need now is a big bag of time, does anyone know where to get that???

Two more blocks!

I finished blocks #6 and 7, so just one more to go before I can begin assembling my top. I made a Missouri Star and a Jacob's Ladder. The last block I am going to make for this quilt will be a Bachelor's Puzzle.

Then, I got tagged by Isabella. The meaning of this is to show you my fourth photo in my fourth map. Uhm... this is a good way to discover what a chaos my photo-archive is, Isabella!!! So anyway, I couldn't really find a fourth map with a fourth picture, anyway, nothing suitable to publish, but I did find a picture a bit blurry but oh so cute I don't want to keep from you:
This is my daughter Isabelle on her fourth birthday with Krijn, the youngest son of friends of ours. You must know that nowadays Krijn seems to not want Isabelle anywhere too near of him, so this is a very rare picture to cherish! Now it is my turn to tag four more people: Simone, Iris, Yvonne and Tineke.

block #5

Here's my 5th block, "card trick". This is a block I have chosen myself, we haven't made it in the course. I like how it turned out. I'm beginning to doubt more and more if I am going to finish the top in time, but I have this little quilt to practice the actual quilting on, in case it isn't finished next thursday. I noticed that patching on a deadline doesn't work for me, so having this block finished today is good, the next three blocks are already cut, now tonight by the tv I will do some stitching. I have picked up the quilted hearts garden afghan again. Otherwise I will make more and more mistakes in the patching and only will get frustrated...

Block #4

I have to speed up things a bit, yesterday in the lesson we were told that our quilt top is supposed to be ready in two weeks... So today I have worked on the log cabin block we started in the lesson, and this is the result. Now on with the other blocks!

Block #3

Block #3 from my quiltcourse is finished, it took quite some time but I think it is the nicest block until now (though you mustn't look at the back, ironing is not one of my virtues...). It's a variation of the "drunkards path". Tomorrow is another lesson and we are going to learn the log cabin, which is the last block we will make in the lessons. I will add another four blocks. In the meantime I chose the background fabric for the blocks, a very light yellow/cream color. It will be nice together, although I wasn't sure of the colors in the beginning, I am liking it more and more.

Happy New Year!!!

A happy new year to you all, I hope you had wonderful holidays, we sure did.

Christmas vacation is over now, but I am staying home for one more week since I had an operation on my leg yesterday. So a week rest for me. In the vacation my husband transformed a storage room in the attic into a sewing room for me, which you can see in the first two pictures. I am very happy with it!

Remember that RR I was joining? In the meantime I had two of the project here, the first from Bianca, but I am not going to show you any pictures of that, since Bianca decided it should stay a suprise for her. The second one I worked on was that from Simone, and you can see that and what I stitched on it (part of "Moose Lodge" from La-D-Da) in the third and fourth picture. I expect the next RR in the mail any moment, that is if it is not delayed by the inches of snow we had here yesterday.
